Genius’ nan uses five-minute cling film hack to take Christmas tree down

A nan who revealed how she packs away her Christmas tree so quickly has left people stunned.

Instead of carefully wrapping the ornaments, untangling the lights and dismantling the tree, Larraine McDougall wraps the entire thing in cling film – yes, you heard that right.

The 71-year-old leaves all the baubles and other decorations on the festive tree until the yuletide season is over.

Larraine then puts it in the garage until the following Christmas when she can unwrap it in a matter of seconds.

But this isn’t the first time she’s tested the hack out, as her daughter, Trudy McDougall Alexander, claims she’s been doing it to her £80 B&Q fake fir for the last four years.

Trudy posted snaps of her mum’s smart idea to Facebook where it went viral, receiving more than 20,000 likes and thousands of comments.

Larraine apparently used to love decorating the tree when grandson Jack, now 24 and Hannah, 26, were little but now she can’t be bothered.

She said: “I really can’t believe how popular my idea is and why this has become so popular with all these likes and comments.

“But I am overjoyed with the laughs and happiness it has brought to everyone with the daily sadness we are seeing on the news, this is just fantastic.

“I love it and I bet everyone will be doing it now.”

Trudy, 42, commented: “She has been doing it for four years now.

“It started when she moved house one December so she did it to move her tree into her new home.

“She used to spend hours putting them all up and taking them down again.

“She loves her Christmas tree but dreaded how much time she spent on it.”

Trudy – who lives down the road from her mum in Newbiggin-by-the-sea, Northumberland – added: “I really do hope this cheers so many more people up.

“This horrible pandemic is causing nothing but sadness and depression to a lot of people.”

In her Facebook post, she said: “My mother is 71 now and doesn’t like wasting time, so a quick wrap and straight in the garage.

“Five mins and tree down five mins and its back up.

“Anyone else do this?”

She said her mum has been blown away by the response on social media, where people branded the nan a “genius”.

Trudy added: “She is on Facebook herself. She cannot believe it.”
